Strawberry Daiquiri

One of the most popular forms of Daiquiri, the Strawberry Daiquiri is perfect for a hot summer’s day by the pool.

The name Daiquiri just so happens to be the name of a beach and iron mine near Santiago Cuba and the word is of Taino origin. The drink is said to of been invented by Jennings Cox , who was an American mining engineer during the Spanish-American war. It is also said that US congressman William A. Chandler introduced the cocktail to clubs in New York after purchasing one in 1902 after purchasing the Santiago iron mines.

The drink remained local in consumption till 1909 when a US Naval officer tried Cox’s drink. It was then introduced into the Army and Naval club in Washington D.C and over the proceeding decade the drink became more popular. It became a favourite of writer Ernest Hemingway and President John F. Kennedy.

Originally the drink was made to be served in a tall glass with cracked ice, with a teaspoon of sugar and a few squirts of lime juice over the top of the ice. Then two to three ounces of White Rum would be added to complete the mixture. The drink would then be stirred with a long bar spoon till the glass was frosty. The drink has since evolved into a shaken drink with the same ingredients but most commonly served in a Coupe or Martini glass.

The Daquiri has since taken on many forms and had many twists taken on it. Everyone seems to have their own preference on a favourite but the Strawberry Daiquiri seems to be an overwhelming favourite for a lot of people. Here is how it is made.

Further Information

As you may know you can make frozen versions of pretty much all Daiquiris. In this case you would use 5-6 strawberries, which you would place in a blender with ice and all your other ingredients. Then you would blend until you get your desired consistency. Of course, the more ice you have in the blender the slushier and thicker your Daiquiri will be.
