Shirley Temple

A classic Mocktail inspired by an actress and brought into modern times. This is the Shirley Temple.

The Shirley Temple is a very simple but delicious Mocktail that’s appeal comes from its overly sweet taste . This drink was often served to children dining with adults who would be drinking regular cocktails, similar to an Arnold Palmer or Roy Rodgers.

It is thought the original drink was created by a bartender at Chasens restaurant in West Hollywood, California, to serve then-child actress Shirley Temple. However other claims have been made on its origin.

The actress herself said in an interview she was not a big fan of the drink saying: "The saccharine sweet, icky drink? Yes, well... those were created in the probably middle 1930s by the Brown Derby Restaurant in Hollywood and I had nothing to do with it. But all over the world, I am served that. People think it is funny. I hate them. Too sweet!" In 1988 Temple took out a lawsuit to prevent a bottled version of the drink using her name ever being sold.

The original recipe calls for Ginger Ale and Grenadine, but in modern times this has been changed to use Lemon Lime Soda or Lemonade and sometimes Orange Juice. Adding 1.5 ounces of Vodka or Rum to this drink makes a “Dirty Shirley”. If dark rum is used, it produces “Shirley Temple Black”, a homage to her married surname.

So, it is a great non alcoholic drink with a storied history and plenty of room to adjust to your liking. If you are struggling for Mocktail ideas or just need something quick and easy , the Shirley Temple is the way to go ! Here is how it is made.
