Sex on the beach

When it comes to summer drinks and cocktails , there are few bigger names than the Sex on the beach. It is simple but satisfying and will have you enjoying every second of your warm summer days.

The sex on the beach is one of a few IBA (International bar tending association) official cocktails that is these days is everywhere. It would be unusual not to see it being served in a bar or drinking establishment. Like a lot for cocktails it has many variations such as a “Woo Woo “or “Sex on fire” which add or remove ingredients from the original recipe making it very adaptable.

The drink itself was first made by bartender Ted Pizio in Confetti’s bar in Florida. Pizio was challenged to sell as much Peach Schnapps in the area as part of a promotion for a new spirit. He made the fruity drink and named based on the reason he thought tourists visited the area. Then in 1987 he decided the drink was more popular than Mickey Mouse thinking tourists on spring break would love it an, so he named it the Sex on the beach.

There is some evidence of the drink existing before this during 1982 in a cocktail book where the recipe combined a Fuzzy navel with Cape Codder. Regardless of its origins , the Sex on the beach has become classic and favourite with many people becoming so popular it got its own hit song by Dutch Euro dance group T-Spoon. It even influenced the famous song Cake by the ocean by DNCE after the title got lost in translation by the Swedish producers working with the band. Here is how to make one of the kings of summer drinks.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 oz. (45ml) Vodka

  • 1/2 oz. (15ml) Peach Schnapps

  • 1 1/2 oz. (45ml) Fresh orange juice

  • 1 1/2 oz. (45ml) Cranberry juice

  • Garnish : Maraschino cherry and Orange slice on a skewer

Preparation

  1. Add ice to a Hurricane or Highball glass about halfway

  2. Add your Vodka , Peach Schnapps, Orange and Cranberry juices

  3. Garnish with your Maraschino cherry and Orange slice on a skewer

Further Information

Some recipes may specify shaking the ingredients in this drink, I prefer a straight build (all ingredients just get put in a glass). In my opinion this keeps the drinks’ unique sunset like look and intended flavour.

If you want to substitute Peach schnapps for a peach liqueur , this is an option and may end up making your drink sweeter depending on the brand you are using.

Like we talked about above, there are many twists you can make on this recipe to make other cocktails. So keep an eye out for future “Sex on the beach” variation articles on the website if you are a fan of this drink.
