The Rob Roy will seem a familiar cocktail to many who are privy to bartending , especially if you have ever tried a Manhattan. It is of course essentially a Manhattan, but Scotch Whiskey is used in place of traditional Rye Whiskey. Created in 1894 by a bartender at the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan, New York City, it was named in honour of the premiere of the operetta Rob Roy by composer Reginald De Koven and lyricist Harry B. Smith loosely based upon Scottish folk hero Rob Roy MacGregor.
Like the Manhattan , the Rob Roy is a very spirit forward cocktail that is not afraid to show off its bite. The herbal tones of the Sweet Vermouth pair very well with the Scotch Whiskey to make for an imposing but very sip worthy drink. It would be worth playing about with various Scotches for this cocktail as well as ratios because everyone has a preference on strength and balance with these kinds of drink.
The Rob Roy is certainly a drink you will want to savour and sit on to figure out how you like it. Once you get your head around it, you have got a drink that you will never forget.
Here is how it is made.
Ingredients
2 oz. (60 ml) Scotch Whiskey
1 oz. (30ml) Sweet Vermouth
2 Dashes of Angostura Bitters
Garnish : Lemon Twist
Preparation
Add ice and the ingredients into a mixing glass.
Stir gently for 20 seconds.
Strain into a chilled Martini glass.
Garnish with a Lemon twist.
