Porn star Martini

Statistically it is the most popular cocktail drink in the UK and France, as well as being a regular feature in cocktail bars around the world. Today we look at the Porn star Martini.

Most cocktails have a complicated history when it comes to where they were first made. However, the Porn star Martinis is fairly simple. It was invented in 1999 by Douglas Ankrah, the owner of LAB bar in London, England. The name of this drink came with some controversy , however Ankrah denied that he named the drink such to be intentionally provocative. He claimed he named the drink so to invoke a “stylish and confident drink ,that’s pure indulgence, sexy, fun and evocative". More recently shops such as Marks and Spencer’s have had to change the name of the drink that they sell in cans to “Passion star Martini” after complaints that the name normalizes pornography.

Whatever you think of the name, there is no denying the drink itself is very solid and flavourful. I have tried a few Porn star Martinis from various cocktail bars and pubs over the years, each is made slightly differently and may differ in taste a bit. However, the base flavour of sweet Passion fruit with a hint of vanilla makes for a smooth easy drinking experience that I never get tired of. If you have never tried a Porn star Martini, you have been missing out big time and I encourage you to make it the next drink you go for at the bar. Here is how it is made.

Ingredients

  • 2oz. (60ml) Vodka

  • 1oz. (30ml) Passion fruit puree

  • 1oz. (30ml) Vanilla syrup

  2. Add all ingredients into shaker.

  4. Strain and pour into a chilled Coupe or Martini glass.

  5. Garnish with half a Passion fruit and pour out a shot of Prosecco or Champaign.

Further Information

There are different recipes for this drink, some include Passion fruit juice, Passoa (Passion fruit liqueur) and other ingredients. This one is just one of my favourite as I feel the Vanilla syrup really adds to the Passion fruit flavour of the drink and makes it that much tastier. But feel free to experiment to see which variation is your favourite.

The purpose of the shot of Prosecco and Champaign in this, is to counter the sweetness in the drink if it is too sweet for your liking.
