Midori Sour

If you find you are more drawn to smooth easy to drink cocktails, then the Midori Sour might be next on your list of drinks to try. Combining the sour taste of Melon liqueur with a smooth frothy texture, it certainly has its place in a bar.

Midori is a Melon Liqueur that was founded and is manufactured in Japan as well as France ,USA and Mexico more recently. It was exclusive in Japan until 1987 and is named after the Japanese word for “Green”. It is typically mixed to make cocktails using sour flavours from ingredients such as lemon juice, lemon lime sodas and in more modern times Mountain Dew. Some of the most popular cocktails featuring Midori are the Japanese slipper, the Midori illusion, and the Midori Sour. The first two we will cover in future posts, but for now we shall look at the Midori Sour.

If you have read our article on the Whiskey Sour, then you may be familiar with the concept of using egg whites in cocktails and “sour” drinks. The Midori Sour is no different in the way its foamy smooth texture is created. You will find other recipes for this on the internet that do not use egg whites and use Sour mix and sodas to add more of a citrus sour bite to the drink. This is fine if you prefer that style of drink and do not like the smoother style of Midori Sour.

I love cocktails like these, they are so satisfying an easy to drink but are not very heavy on alcohol so you could probably have a couple and still be in good frame of mind. Certainly, if you have never made a Midori based drink, I think this would be a great place to start. Here is how to make the Midori Sour.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ oz. (45ml) Midori (Melon Liqueur)

  • ½ oz. (15ml) Cointreau (Orange Liqueur)

  • 1 oz. (30ml) Fresh lemon juice

  • ½ oz. (15ml) Sugar syrup

  • 1 egg white

Garnish: A lemon wheel

Preparation

  1. Dry shake an egg white in your shaker with a cube of ice to emulsify it.

  2. Add the rest of the ingredients into the shaker with ice.

  3. Shake for 10-15 seconds.

  4. Strain and pour into an old-fashioned glass filled with ice.

  5. Garnish with a lemon wheel.
