Margarita

Famous worldwide for it is sweet and salty taste , the Margarita is definitely a cocktail you are going to want to try at least once in your life.

The Margarita is regarded as a Mexican and American drink that originally spawned from the “Daisy” drink (Margarita is Spanish for Daisy) which used Brandy instead of Tequila. This became very popular during Prohibition in American, where people would travel over the boarder for their alcohol. One of the first accounts of this drink being mention was by an Iowa newspaper editor James Graham in 1936 where he said he saw it Tijuana , years before any other of the “creation myth” stories. One of the earliest stories of the Margarita being made was in 1938 by Carlos "Danny" Herrera at his restaurant Rancho La Gloria, halfway between Tijuana and Rosarito, Baja California. It was said he made it for a customer and former Ziegfeld dancer Marjorie King, who was allergic to many spirits, but not to tequila.

There is so much more history behind the Margarita and if you are interested, I encourage you to read up on it as there are so many stories by people who claim to of come up with the original recipe. As well there have been many different variations of the Margarita that have come from the original (Frozen Margarita , blended Margarita etc) , it may be worth trying a few to see which one is your favourite.

What I love about this drink is the balance of sweet and salty that you get from the salt on the rim of the glass and then the sweetness of the actual drink. On my first time trying this drink , every sip felt like a flavour experience in itself and it never got boring. I feel like this is one of those drinks that could become a favourite of yours after the first try. Here is how this Mexican classic is made.

Ingredients

  • 2oz. (60ml) Tequila (Blanco or Reposado )

  • 3/4 oz. (22.5ml) Triple Sec or Cointreau

  • 1 oz. (30ml) Fresh Lime juice

  • 3/4 oz. (22.5ml) Agave nectar

  • Garnish: Lime wedge

Preparation

  1. Cut a Lime in half and run it around the rim of your Margarita or Martini glass.

  2. Roll the rim of the glass through some salt , coating it well.

  3. In a ice filled shaker add your Tequila, Triple Sec, Lime juice and Agave nectar.

  4. Shake for 10-15 seconds.

  5. Add ice to your glass and strain your mixture over it.

  6. Garnish with your Lime wedge.

Further Information

The original recipe for this does not include Agave nectar. I included it because it adds more sweetness to the drink which I think makes it better. If you are not a fan of overly sweet drinks you can leave this out and just go with the Tequila , Triple Sec and Lime Juice. If you want a much sweeter Margarita, you can add more Agave nectar.
