On a list of cocktails that have a rich history and have a big part in making bartending and mixology what it is today, the Manhattan is probably right at the top. Records suggest it originated from the Manhattan Club in New York City during the 1870’s where Iain Marshall invented it for a banquet hosted by Jennie Jerome in honour of presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden. From there it is suggested that the banquet was such a success that the drink became a popular choice and was referred to as “ the Manhattan cocktail” after the club it originated from.
Another story is that the Manhattan was invented in the 1860s by a bartender named Black at a bar on Broadway near Houston Street. Many of these stories exist and we many never truly know who made it first, but one thing is for sure is that it’s a drink close to the hearts of bartenders all around the Manhattan area.
Its build is simple but carries a lot of sharp flavour in it. The original recipe calls for Rye Whiskey (which can be replaced with Bourbon) with Sweet Italian Vermouth and a few dashes of Angostura Bitters. It’s very much a strong bitter kind of drink , but if you are use to similar Whiskey cocktails then it wont taste too far from what you are used to.
The Manhattan is one of those cocktails that you want to say you have tried even if it’s not your usual taste. It packs a lot of flavour and has the look of a truly classy drink that has stood the test of time for a reason. Try it out and be a part of drinking history!
