Another drink so good it is both a cocktail and a shot. The Lemon Drop combines strong sweet and sour flavours to make for an incredible drinking experience.
The Lemon Drop has often been described as a “take on ” or a variant of the traditional Vodka Martini. The Lemon Drop was invented in 1970 by Norman Jay Hobday, founder and proprietor of Henry Africa's, a fern bar in the Russian Hill neighbourhood of San Francisco, California that opened in 1969. After its creation, the drink spread fast to other San Francisco saloons. The drink was most likely named after the popular American Lemon Drop candy which like the drink has distinct sweet and sour taste. It originally started out as a regular cocktail served in a chilled glass, but since the 1990’s it has also been served as a shooter in a shot glass.
I really love the balance between sweet and sour in this drink, it reminds me of the balance a well-made Margarita has between the sweet of the drink of the drink and the saltiness of the salt rimmed glass. Of course, in this case it is the sweet of the sugar on the glass matched with the very sour citrus taste of the drink that go down so well together. If you love cocktails with strong potent flavours, then this will definitely end up being a favourite of yours. Here is how to make a Lemon Drop.
