Whether you are a fan of cocktails or you go to is a spirit with a mixer, you have most likely seen or heaard of Disaronno at some point. It is produced in Saronno, in the Lombardy region of Italy, and is sold worldwide. It's origins stem back to 1525 when it was called Amaretto di Saronno (Amaretto from Saronno) up till 2001 where is was rebranded as "Disaronno Originale" for marketing reasons. This famous liqueur is sold in an oblong glass decanter style bottle which was designed by a craftsman from Murano. So what is this Liqueurs selling points and why has it been so well recieved for so long ? Lets take a look.

What is it like to drink ?

According to the company, the liqueur is an infusion of apricot kernel oil with "absolute alcohol, burnt sugar, and the pure essence of seventeen selected herbs and fruits".

Being an Almond/Cherry Liqueur, the one flavour alot of people will associate with Disaronno is that of a Cherry Bakewell. This has made it a popular choice over named brand or cheaper amarettos. It is a great Liqueur to drink over ice or just straight up, it is not too intense and its light toasted almond and mazipan flavour makes it pleasent and smooth.

A lot of people who drink Disaronno will have it as a part of a mixed drink, opting to use Cola, Ginger ale or a fruit juice as a mixer. As well as this, Disaronno is widley used in may great cocktails that feature in most standard cocktail bar menus. One of our personal favourites is the Amaretto Sour which brings togther the sweet almond flavour of Disaronno with the sour dry elements of a Sour style cocktail.

Is it worth my money ?

Disaronno comes in a few different bottle sizes with your chocies being 5Cl, 7Cl, 1 Litre and even a 1.75 Litre bottle. Of course these get more expensive as they scale up , but a standard 5Cl bottle of Disaronno will cost you around £16 -£18 depending on the store you are buying from and your country. This is slightly more expensive than name brand Amarettos that you can find in most stores, however we argue this extra cost is worth the unique taste and uality you get form Disaronnos product.

A bottle does tend to go a long way as well if you are just using it for cocktail making , as most recipes do not require the use of large measurements of it.

Final Thoughts

Disaronno has very little competition in the way of Amarettos and for a good reason. It has its own unique taste and is a very reliable Liqueur that can be used in many ways. Whether you are mixologist looking to make something with it or just a regular drinker looking for something smooth and tasty to sip on during a night in or out , then Disaronno is a solid bet that will not disappoint you. We recommend you check this product as well as the recipe articles on our website that feature it .
