Daiquiri

A main staple cocktail in bars worldwide. This is the Daiquiri.

Prep time: 2 minutes

Serves : 1

Strength: Light

Daiquiri is a name given to a family of cocktails that typically contain Rum, Citrus juice (usually Lime juice) and a sweetener.

Its name comes from a beach and an Iron mine near Santiago de Cuba where American engineer Jennings Cox supposedly invented it. It grew in popularity and was only local until after 1909 when Rear Admiral Lucius W. Johnson, a U.S. Navy medical officer, tried Cox's drink. Johnson subsequently introduced it to the Army and Navy Club in Washington, D.C., and drinkers of the daiquiri increased over the space of a few decades. The drink was a favourite for Ernest Hemingway and President John F. Kennedy.

Originally the Daiquiri was served in a tall glass over cracked ice. It was made with a teaspoon of sugar and the juice of two limes poured over the sugar with two or three ounces of White Rum to complete the mixture. This was also typically stirred , whereas today Daiquiris are usually shaken.

Its flavour is a very simple balance of sweet and sour , which can be changed by adjusting the amount of Lime juice or sugar syrup in the mixture.

Daquiris have taken many forms over the years, different flavours such as Strawberry and Banana are now the norm and the original has fallen out of favor.

Frozen Daiquiris are also a fairly modern variation of this drink which involves blending the ingredients in a blender with ice till you get the desired consistency.
