Cape Codder

Cranberry juice and Vodka go hand in hand for so many people, and it is no surprise that such a simple drink would be loved by so many people. Continuing with the theme of easy drinks you can make at home with little effort or preparation, this is the Cape Codder.

If you have read our article on making a Screwdriver, you will know how simple but satisfying making a drink can be. Now technically drinks like the Screwdriver and Cape Codder are referred to as “highballs” or “mixed” drinks as they only contain two ingredients and “cocktails” are thought by many to contain three or more. This is not an important concept to understand unless you are interested in the science and method side of drinks making like I am. Basically all cocktails are “mixed drink” because ingredients are mixed or shaken together , however not all “ mixed drinks” are “cocktails” due to not all of them containing what is thought to be the three essential parts to a well balanced cocktail. These parts are Spirits/alcohol , sweet and sour. We will be doing articles in the future on the methodology and concepts in drink making but let us get back on track with the Cape Codder.

The Cape Codder drink was first made by the Ocean Spray Cranberry juice grower's cooperative under the name "Red Devil" in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Its name was first used from the early 1960’s. Just like all the drinks related to the Cape Codder , everyone has their own preference on proportions of spirit to juice. Typically, I stick to the ratio of 3:1 (4 ½ oz. juice : 1 ½ oz. Spirits) which applies well to all highball mixed drinks as it masks the alcohol taste well but will not over dilute your drink along with the ice in it. Of course, this is flexible and if you prefer a bit more of a sharp strong drink you can add more spirits or less juice. This will be less balanced but may suit your individual taste more. Also, some people will recommend putting lime juice in this drink to make it more complete instead of just garnishing with a lime wedge.

This is a great drink for many occasions, whether you are hanging out with friends, family or just chilling at home trying to relax . It is easy to make , requires few ingredient and no previous bartending or drinks making knowledge. Here is how to make a Cape Codder.
