Another tasteful sour drink with all the deliciousness of blue berries. This is the Blueberry Gin Sour.
If you have read our recipes for the Whiskey Sour and Midori Sour , you will know we are big fans here of these sorts of drinks. Especially when it comes to their smooth easy to drink texture which is usually down to the foam created on them through the use of egg whites. The Blueberry Gin Sour is no different and on top of this it comes with all the sweet natural flavours of blueberries which is then well balanced with the sour of lemon juice.
The Gin in this is well hidden and it would take a well-trained palate to pick it up, but this is good as it means the recipe will be fairly adaptable in terms of types of Gins you could use in it. Personally, I just used a plain old London Dry Gin to get some initial thoughts on the drink, however I could image a fruit flavoured or even a spiced Gin not being out of place in this one. It is one of those like a lot of drinks that you can tweak to your own personal taste, so be creative and you may just end up finding a new favourite recipe of yours that you can share with friends and family.
I also love the solid red colour you get once it is poured, it is one of those cocktails that presented well can look so crisp and amazing. If smooth textures and light fruit flavours with a kick of sour are your thing , then this will be a drink you should be rushing to make. Here is how to make a Blueberry Gin Sour.
Ingredients
2 oz. (60ml) Gin
Blueberries
1 Tbsp Simple Syrup
The Juice of one Lemon
A dash of Egg White
Garnish : Lemon Twist
Preparation
Add the blueberries, lemon juice and simple syrup into a shaker glass and muddle them together.
Add the Gin and Egg white and dry shake the ingredients together well (shake without ice in the shaker)
Add a few cubes of ice into the shaker and shake again until chilled.
Pour and strain into a Coupe glass over ice.
Garnish with a lemon peel twist.
Additional Information
When pouring the drink, you will still get bits of blueberry in it even after straining using a typical shaker strainer. A way around this would be to double strain using a tea strainer, however this will mean sacrificing the foam on the top of the drink which brings that smooth texture that Sour drinks tend to bring.
A great way to add more flavour to this drink maybe to make use of a blueberry flavoured Gin instead of a regular dry Gin. Also, the addition of a fruit flavoured bitters such as Cherry , Cranberry or Orange may make your Blueberry Gin Sour that much better.
