The Blood & Sand is one of a few classic cocktails that you will find that includes the use of Scotch Whiskey. It gets it's name from the Rudolph Valentino 1922 bullfighter movie Blood and Sand. This recipe also made an apperance in Harry Craddock's Savoy Cocktail Book in 1930.


The Blood & Sand's main ingredients include blood orange juice, sweet vermouth, cherry heering and scotch. These create a warm pleasent flavour, with the Blood Orange adding an aspect of sweetness and the Scotch bringing a peaty smoky taste. It's a very unique drink that has its critiques , but it also has a following of people who enjoy Whiskey based cocktails with special flavour bases.


In the history of classic cocktails, the Blood & Sand has its place and we would definitely recommend giving it a try to see if you have a soft spot for it. Some would argue this is a perfect cocktail for the autumn when you are next to a open fire enjoying good company.



Here is how it is made.








Blood & Sand Ingredients


 

  • 3/4 oz. (22.5 ml) Scotch Whiskey

  • 3/4 oz. (22.5 ml) Sweet Vermouth

  • 3/4 oz. (22.5 ml) Cherry Herring (or Cherry Brandy)

  • 3/4 oz. (22.5 ml) Blood Orange Juice



Garnish : Orange Zest or Twist






Preparation


 
  1. Add all ingredients into a shaker with ice.

  2. Shake well till chilled.

  3. Pour and strain into a chilled Martini glass.

  4. Garnish with an Orange Zest or Twist.
