Black Russian

The darker cousin to the famous White Russian. This is the Black Russian.

Prep time : 2 minutes

Drinks can be completely changed with the addition or removal of ingredients. In this case we’re taking out the cream from the well known White Russian cocktail. This not only makes for a simpler drink, but it also completely changes the standout flavour that you get from it.

The Black Russian dates back to 1949 and comes from Brussels. It was supposedly created by a bartender called Gustave Tops at the Hotel Metropole. He created it in honour of Perle Mesta, the US Ambassador to Luxembourg at the time. Since then its become one of those drinks that’s a must for bartenders to know.

The Coffee Liqueur is what really takes focus here and the Vodka just adds that extra alcoholic boost you want in your drink. This is a simple stir built drink so can be made on a moments notice for anyone you like. Also, if you love your coffee flavours then you can adjust the recipe and add a bit more Coffee Liqueur into it to increase the sweet taste.

Drinks don’t come easier than this, in fact the hardest part is dropping the ice cubes into the glass. So if you are in the mood for something sweet but without a doubt strong and sharp, then a Black Russian may just be something you’ll want to give a go.

Here is how it is made.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ oz. (45ml) Vodka

  • ¾ oz. (22.5ml) Coffee Liqueur

Preparation

  1. Add ice to a rocks glass.

  2. Add the Vodka and Coffee Liqueur.

  3. Stir well for 10 – 15 seconds.
